I've had a few cases lately of Checkvist (desktop web, production version) stopping accepting most inputs. When this happens, some commands work (eg. show/hide details or completed items), but the selection/cursor can't be moved, nor can any edits be made.
When this happens, it seems to be stuck that way until I do a page refresh. Thus far I don't know how to reproduce this, it just crops up now and then. Has anyone else come across this?

I'm just another customer, so this isn't an official answer.
ReplyDeleteSometimes Checkvist's servers can be a bit slow to save changes. Until it saves, Checkvist (correctly) refuses to accept new input (which is why you see this behavior). The browser refresh isn't necessary...it would accomplish the same to simply wait a few seconds. There's some sort of cursor, normally invisible (during the usual fast saves), that appears if you look for it in such instances. I forgot where it shows up (which proves this isn't a frequent problem!).
You don't particularly notice the 10 gazillion times when the system is perfectly responsive, so if this lag occurs even just .001% of the time, it can seem like a serious problem. Just get used to taking a breath, massaging your shoulders, etc. Five secs is usually all it takes. Longest I ever waited was about 10 secs.
If it happens repeatedly, definitely shoot a note to support so they can take a look at the server.
Hope that helps....
Thanks Jim, yes, it's possible I'm just hitting slow patches now and then. OTOH, the occasion that prompted me to post was an editing stall of several minutes, and the subsequent page refresh was instant, so I have a feeling something got genuinely stuck. The other observation I'd make is that I've only noticed this recently, having used Checkvist in earnest for over a year. Perhaps my lists are getting big? I usually have completed items hidden so don't notice, and I rarely wipe.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, having noted it I'll keep a closer eye on future occurrences to see if there's any obvious pattern.
Hello Crispin Bennett, thanks for letting us know about the problem.
ReplyDeleteIf the system really got stuck (it is possible, there could be a bug), a possible way to get debug information for us is to open a Javascript console and copy javascript log from there. Right click -> Inspect -> Console tab -> Right click -> Save as...
Steps to reproduce this (or at least which operations you performed when this problem has happened) would be useful as well.
Thanks again,
Hey Kirill Maximov -- I've attached a link to a log from around when this happened most recently. Sorry, not entirely sure what the last operation was (I was typing and moving around a bunch of stuff quickly and kind of lost track). I'll report again if I spot what's going on next time.

Thanks a lot, will investigate!
ReplyDeleteThis just started happening lately to me. For me, it's frequently when I've created a new list. I use "ll", type a new list name, and then when I get there I can't do anything. A refresh works.
ReplyDeleteIf it's any help, the list also doesn't have the boilerplate gray text instructions for adding a new item when this happens, but it does when I refresh
Tim Ariyeh Thanks, tried to reproduce, failed :( Could it be related to the internet speed? When a new list is created, Checkvist offers to edit its title - does it happen when you face the error?
ReplyDeleteCrispin Bennett Thanks a lot for the log - it was really helpful. I believe I've fixed the problem, and the fix is now deployed to https://beta.checkvist.com . Going to test it for a while and update the production site.
Thanks Kirill Maximov, much appreciated. I'll use the beta for a while myself.
ReplyDeleteThe fix has been deployed to the production site, thanks agian!
