Someone please remind me: when pasting in multi line text, how do I control whether lines are added as a single multi-line item or as separate items?

Keying Enter to make a line break on a line following a Shift-Enter does not seem to work. Instead the list entry is submitted. I haven't tried this for some time but I recall it worked before.
