On https://beta.checkvist.com we're trying to change overdue due date presentation in a list - now real missed date is shown instead of red 'overdue' text. It seems that it is more usable. What do you think?

  1. Looks good, though it's a little harder to spot (scan) all overdue markers when there are also tags with backgound color (the long „overdue“ immediately caught the eye). No question, now there is more information in it. Wish there was a setting for the date format.

  2. Ralf Hauber Thanks for the follow-up. BTW, for overdue you can also use 'due: overdue ' syntax for filter and search.
Regarding the date format setting - why would you want it? We tried to made date syntax unambiguous.

I really don't like settings which can be avoided :)

  3. Filtering is not always an option. E. g. when I'm (re-)planning tasks, I need to see priority and due date at the same time. Those two are sometimes conflicting.

In the old style, overdue tasks were easily scannable because of color and the (long) word which was always the same. In the new style, it's only the color. Not all dates in my lists are overdue. ;) I think I might turn to custom CSS to add an icon or some other style.

Date formatting: I often use ISO 8601. It is language independent. It is easy to parse. For the long date format (that includes the year), the sequence 'year-month-day' is more convenient for me than 'month day, year'. In some countries the common sequence is 'day. month year' which swaps the first two and therefore can be confusing. For the export 'ex', you use ISO anyway.

I agree that settings should be avoided. And a setting for the date is probably not the easiest, as you now have three formats: relative (like tomorrow), short (month day) and long (month day, year).

  4. Ralf Hauber Thanks for your feedback.

I thought about adding an icon for overdue tasks in addition to red background, but decided that would be an overkill. You can always add such an icon for .dueDate.overdue CSS selector.

About date format - our point was to have a clear and useful format for 90% of people who look at the list. It definitely should not be for a machine but a human :)
We also show due date details in the tooltip for the due date element, but I understand that this requires some mouse moves :)

    Thanks again,

  5. Oh, I didn't mean machines, only when I mentioned 'ex'. Maybe the term parsing was misleading: as a human, I also 'parse' what I read (identify structure and then give meaning to it).

You know your 90 %, and if those are satisfied and don't expect localization, it's ok.
